Dr. Carla Stokes conducted workshops for young women and adult allies in Chicago on October 26-27, 2007 (sponsored by the Young Women's Action Team and Columbia College Center for the Study of Women & Gender in the Arts & Media).

September 2007: Diva Girls Workshop
The Young Women's Leadership Council screened a clip from Hip Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes and led three workshops for girls on images of women in hip hop at the Diva Girls summit.
September 2007: Using Youth Development Approaches to Address HIV/AIDS at the Community Level
Dr. Carla Stokes presented a case study of HOTGIRLS' approach to HIV prevention and youth development at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. 37th Annual Legislative Conference on September 26th in Washington DC.

April 2007: HIV/AIDS Workshop at Spelman College
The Young Women's Leadership Council organized an interactive workshop to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS among Atlanta University Center students at Spelman College.
March 2006: "HIV/AIDS...What Chu Know About Dat?!": HIV/AIDS Awareness Summit
The 2005-2006 Girls' Advisory Council organized a summit for local youth (girls and boys ages 8-17) to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on black women and girls.
July 2005: "Aye Shawty, Lemme Holla Atcha!": Steet Harassment Summit for Girls
The 2004-2005 Girls' Advisory Council organized a summit for teen girls ages 13-19 on Saturday, July 9, 2005. The summit raised awareness about street harassment, violence against women and girls, assertive communication, self-respect and positive self-image, self-defense, images in music videos, and taking action to stop street harassment.
June 2004: "Doing the Right Thing": Health Summit for Girls
The HOTGIRLS 2003-2004 Girls' Advisory Council organized an inspirational day of health, self-empowerment, fun, and sisterhood at the Health and Empowerment Summit for teen girls of African descent ages 13-17 held on June 5, 2004 in Atlanta, GA. The theme was "Doing the Right Thing," and topics addressed included HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, healthy relationships, teen dating violence, leadership development, and a special workshop led by Alesia Adams, founder and Director of the Center to End Adolescent Sexual Exploitation on (CEASE) the impact of the sex trade/street economy on teen girls.
March 2004: War on Girls
Carla Stokes and founding Street Team member London Dyer participated in the "War on Girls Round Table" community discussion sponsored by the National Council of Negro Women - Greater Atlanta Millennium Section. Topics included images of black women and girls in hip hop, sexuality, teen dating, and the role of adults in improving the lives of girls. In April, the duo raised awareness about HOTGIRLS as guests on V-103.3 FM.
July 2003: Blackgirl Magazine Carla Stokes was the keynote speaker at the BlackgirlMagazine "Sessions" event at the National Black Arts Festival. Several hundred girls of all ages were in attendance. |
