"We're on Fire!": FIREGRL Club Wins State Award for Excellence in Health & Life Skills Programming
The HOTGIRLS FIREGRL Club program at the Intel ® Computer Clubhouse at the John H. Harland Boys & Girls Club in Southwest Atlanta, received the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s 2007 Georgia Area Council State Program Award for excellence in Health & Life Skills programming.
The program also received a 2007 Honor Award for Program Excellence in recognition of our exemplary work in metropolitan Atlanta.
July 2007: HOTGIRLS Awarded Grant from the Ms. Foundation for Women!
HOTGIRLS was awarded a grant from the Ms. Foundation for Women's Safety Fund. The Ms. Foundation is the country’s first national, multi-issue women’s fund. The support will enable us to expand FIREGRL.com, our web site for teen girls, and create GetYourGameRight.com, a web site to raise awareness about street harassment and gender-based violence among young men and boys. March 2007: Study Finds Black Teen Girls Use Internet Home Pages to Construct Identity and Respond to Sexual Media Messages
HOTGIRLS President/CEO & Founder, Dr. Carla Stokes published a study in the March-April 2007 issue of Culture, Health & Sexuality on the ways in which black adolescent girls residing in southern states with the highest rates of HIV/AIDS use multimedia technologies and hip hop culture to construct identity and respond to sexual media messages. December 2006: HOTGIRLS Launches Young Women's Leadership Council for Black College Students:
HOTGIRLS was awarded a seed grant from Advocates for Youth’s Young Women of Color Initiative to establish a local chapter of the Young Women of Color Leadership Council in Atlanta. The HOTGIRLS Young Women's Leadership Council is a nine-month (February – October 2007) training and peer health education program for black female undergraduate students (freshmen, sophomores, and juniors) enrolled at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in Atlanta, with a focus on preventing HIV among black women and girls.
