Idia

Idia M. Egonmwan

My name is Idia Marie Egonmwan, I am 18 years old, and I was born in Chicago, IL. When I was 11 years old, my mother died from Cancer, which was the hardest, yet most important thing that I have ever had to deal with. The passing of my mother led me to the decision that I wanted to work in healthcare, which is why my major is Women’s Studies/ Pre-Medicine. I currently attend Spelman College, which I think was the best choice I have ever made. Actually, it was the only choice, because Spelman was the only school that I applied to—luckily everything worked out!

One area that is highly important at Spelman is service to the community, which is one reason why I chose it, or it chose me. I feel that because I have the opportunity to go to college and achieve my goals, it is my duty to give back to the community in order to help those who are not as fortunate as I am to achieve theirs. I joined the Young Women’s Leadership Council because I think it is necessary for young women to understand the importance of treating their bodies like temples and keeping themselves, as well as others healthy. In the future, I plan to obtain my Medical Doctor Degree, as well as a Masters in Public Health. I want to work for the Center for Disease Control in order to help stop the spread, and possibly find the cure, for HIV/AIDS.

Idia was selected by Advocates for Youth for the Young Women of Color Leadership Council.
