Kera Street

My name is Kera Street and I am a junior Religious Studies major/Sociology minor at Spelman College.  Hailing from the great city of Richmond, VA, I am a firm believer that knowledge is power and that truth is the key to freedom.  My interest in HOTGIRLS and the Young Women’s Leadership Council sparked from an intense desire to learn more about HIV/AIDS and how it is disproportionately affecting the African American community.  Unfortunately, this disease has claimed the lives of a few of my family members, but worst than that, it has distorted the minds of the majority of my people.  African Americans and influential black institutions (such as the black church) all across this country have categorized HIV/AIDS out of ignorance.  As a result, they refuse to educate themselves or take the necessary steps to make a difference in our community.  As a member of the Young Women’s Leadership Council and HOTGIRLS, I hope to step up to the plate and begin doing what it takes to affect change in my community.  Through planning, programming, and education, I believe this program will help me to fulfill my dream of becoming the change I wish to see in the world.
